3 Longevity Biotechs Shut Down.
3 Grew 8x To 15x. Could You Tell Which?

Start with one dated company pitch and choose your next research step. Reveal the company, what happened later, and one useful lesson. Try the other examples at your own pace.

Six companies pursuing aging biology, longevity drug discovery, or treatments for age-related disease. Very different outcomes. Base your choice on the information available at the date shown.

Pass: set aside. Watch: wait for more evidence. Tracker: investigate further. These brief snapshots cannot establish a complete investment case. Your choice is a research step; the reveal examines the reasoning without grading you by the eventual outcome.

Company A · 1 of 6Turn signals from mitochondria into treatments for age-related disease.

Information available as of: August 10, 2021

The company pitch, summarized

What if signals from our cells’ energy factories could become medicines for diseases associated with aging? This company was developing treatments inspired by those signals, aiming to improve health as we grow older. Its first human trial met its safety goal, with no serious adverse events. The company reported encouraging liver-enzyme and blood-sugar changes compared with placebo, plus a trend toward lower weight, after just four weeks.

The patient study involved 20 people. Safety was its main goal; the activity findings were exploratory. Liver fat fell substantially in both the treatment and placebo groups, leaving longer-term treatment benefit to be established.

The outcome: CohBar

Wind-down: liquidation and dissolution announced in 2023.

In November 2023, after a proposed merger was terminated, CohBar announced its intention to liquidate and dissolve. It said the amount, if any, available to public shareholders could not then be estimated. That announcement supports a wind-down case, not a claim of a confirmed zero recovery.

You chose: Pass. You chose: Watch. You chose: Add to my research tracker.

Did “encouraging human results” outweigh what the study actually established?

Some blood markers improved more with treatment, but liver fat fell in both groups. This small, four-week safety study supported further investigation; it did not establish lasting disease improvement. That distinction is easy to miss in a promising pitch. It did not predict the later wind-down.

If that distinction taught you something, imagine building that judgment across 25 critical questions, through two short lessons each week. See how the training works →

Company B · 2 of 6Use AI to find medicines for aging and disease faster.

Information available as of: June 12, 2018

The company pitch, summarized

An AI platform aimed to identify drug targets, design new molecules, and discover biomarkers relevant to aging. A major drug-discovery services company led a new financing and planned to combine the platform with its laboratories. The investment followed experimental validation of the technology, providing a practical route from computer-generated ideas to laboratory testing.

The announcement described discovery-stage validation, not proof that a medicine benefited patients. The financing amount, usable cash runway, and investment terms were not disclosed in that announcement. Those gaps would need checking before judging the investment case.

The outcome: Insilico Medicine

9.3×: early private-round cost to IPO offer price.

The June 2018 Series A cost was HK$2.58 per share after split adjustments. Insilico’s December 2025 IPO offer price was HK$24.05, about 9.3 times that cost. This compares prices, not verified realized returns; sale restrictions, timing, fees, and taxes affect what investors receive.

An early company can create value before its medicines are clinically proven.

The missing patient evidence was a real risk, but not proof that the platform lacked value. Examine what has been validated, the remaining clinical work, and the price of entry. The later share price does not show that an early investment was predictable or available to every reader.

Company C · 3 of 6Remove harmful aging cells to help tissues function better.

Information available as of: April 5, 2018

The company pitch, summarized

This company aimed to extend healthy life by removing senescent cells, which accumulate with age and can damage surrounding tissue. Animal research supported the approach, and a portfolio of medicines could potentially address several diseases of aging. Its first clinical study was planned for the first half of 2018, beginning with an osteoarthritis treatment.

The company had developed ways to eliminate these cells and animal models to study the effects. However, it had not yet established that its lead medicine safely improved symptoms in patients. The first human study was an important next test, and an IPO was being pursued to support development.

The outcome: Unity Biotechnology

Closed: dissolution filed in September 2025.

Unity filed a certificate of dissolution effective September 26, 2025. The company’s longevity ambitions did not lead to a lasting operating business. This does not establish the exact loss or recovery of every investor.

You chose: Pass. You chose: Watch. You chose: Add to my research tracker.

Promising aging biology still needs evidence in the intended patients.

Removing cells in an animal model does not establish a useful, safe treatment for a person. Ask whether the proposed dose and delivery improve an outcome patients care about. The later dissolution cannot be predicted from this early evidence gap alone.

Company D · 4 of 6Develop medicines that mimic beneficial effects of calorie restriction.

Information available as of: May 3, 2007

The company pitch, summarized

This company targeted sirtuins, enzymes linked to aging biology, with medicines intended to treat diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Its lead formulation had completed early healthy-volunteer testing and entered patient studies. Other molecules offered further development possibilities, supported by experienced drug developers and more than 100 owned or exclusively licensed patent applications.

Patient results were still pending, and the other molecules had not yet been tested in humans. The company’s US clinical application was on hold while it addressed FDA information requests. Results from one patient study were expected later in 2007, and an IPO was planned.

The outcome: Sirtris Pharmaceuticals

8.6×: early Series A cost to acquisition price.

GSK acquired Sirtris in June 2008 for $22.50 per common share. The 2004 Series A cost was about $2.625 per common share after the reverse split, making the acquisition price about 8.6 times that cost before investor-specific fees and taxes. This was a financial acquisition outcome, not proof that its treatments extended human life.

Commercial value and demonstrated patient benefit are separate questions.

A buyer can value a platform before its medicines are clinically proven. Examine the remaining human evidence and regulatory work, while also asking what a strategic buyer might value. The later acquisition does not make every earlier scientific claim correct.

Company E · 5 of 6Protect the heart by keeping an unstable protein from breaking apart.

Information available as of: June 15, 2018

The company pitch, summarized

An oral medicine aimed to prevent a protein from forming harmful deposits in the heart, including an age-related disease that can shorten life. Its design drew on a naturally occurring protective genetic variant. A study in 32 healthy volunteers showed strong protein stabilization and encouraging tolerability, and a trial in patients was underway.

Patient results were expected by the end of 2018. Stabilizing the protein was not yet proof of longer survival or better daily function. The business depended heavily on one medicine, with competing treatments in development. An IPO was planned to support the next stage; this was an age-related disease treatment, not a claim to slow aging throughout the body.

The outcome: Eidos Therapeutics

15.3×: seed-round cost to IPO offer-price value.

Seed investors paid $1.3248 per preferred share in 2016–2017. Each converted into 1.196 common shares after a stock split. At the June 2018 IPO price of $17, those shares were worth about 15.3 times the seed cost. This is a gross price comparison, not verified realized proceeds; lockups, sale timing, fees, and taxes matter. The quiz snapshot is later than that seed investment.

You chose: Pass. You chose: Watch. You chose: Add to my research tracker.

An unproven patient benefit can coexist with a credible reason to investigate.

The protective genetic clue and protein results supported further research, while patient benefit still needed testing. Examine the connection between the measured effect and a meaningful health outcome. Then assess the entry price separately: the seed-round multiple was not available to someone buying at the IPO.

Company F · 6 of 6Turn discoveries about aging into medicines for diabetes and obesity.

Information available as of: September 21, 2007

The company pitch, summarized

Founded around research into pathways that regulate aging, this company combined early discovery programs with later-stage diabetes medicines. Its licensed diabetes drug had already been used by more than 500,000 patients in Japan. A major pharmaceutical company had invested $10 million through a managed fund and secured negotiation rights over selected programs.

US approval was still needed, and its aging-pathway programs were earlier in development. Management projected 18–24 months of funding only after including the planned IPO proceeds, alongside existing funds and recent financing. Further capital would then be needed. The partner’s investment and negotiation rights did not guarantee future licensing revenue.

The outcome: Elixir Pharmaceuticals

Investor stake valued at zero; company listed as dormant or in liquidation.

DeA Capital’s 2018 annual report listed Elixir among dormant or liquidating companies with zero-value holdings. This documents a failed equity holding for that investor. It does not establish that every investor lost the same amount, or identify a bankruptcy date.

You chose: Pass. You chose: Watch. You chose: Add to my research tracker.

An established drug and a famous partner do not remove financing risk.

Separate the evidence for the licensed medicine from the earlier aging research. Ask which funds are already available, which depend on a future transaction, and whether they cover the next decisive milestone. These were questions to investigate, not proof in advance that the company would fail.

Six selected cases involving aging biology, longevity drug discovery, or age-related disease, reconstructed with later outcomes known. Dates identify information snapshots, not contemporaneous EverLife reviews. Early financing dates can precede these snapshots; the cited multiples are not returns earned from the quiz dates. These brief cases are not complete 25-Gate assessments or evidence that the framework predicted outcomes. They are not a representative performance record. Acquisition payments, IPO price comparisons, dissolution announcements, and an investor’s zero-value holding measure different things. Gross multiples exclude investor-specific costs and taxes; IPO prices do not establish realized proceeds. No current investment recommendation is made.

A personal reason for this work

A personal note
from Eric Pemper

Eric Pemper, publisher of EverLife Capital

My first two longevity biotech investments lost money.

That gave me a personal reason to become more systematic about what I examined before getting involved.

I wanted a process that addressed both the potential health benefit and the financial realities.

The framework reflects the questions I consider critical. In EverLife, you can examine how I apply them.

You should be able to understand the evidence behind an assessment, see where assumptions enter, and disagree when your reasoning supports a different conclusion.

You deserve access to the reasoning behind the score.
