In the early 1900s, the most valuable thing a sick person could be given was rest.
Tuberculosis was the leading killer in the industrialized world, and the entire economy of treating it was built on a single scarce resource: clean mountain air. Sanatoriums rose in the Alps and the Adirondacks. Fortunes were made on altitude, sunlight, and silence. Whole towns lived off the scarcity of a place to breathe.
Then in 1943, a graduate student isolated streptomycin from a clod of dirt.
The sanatoriums did not empty overnight. The compression was gradual, and then sudden. Within two decades, the entire architecture of TB treatment had collapsed and migrated. It moved from real estate to molecules. From a scarce place to a scarce compound. And the value migrated with it, to the people who understood that the scarcity had moved.
This is what happens every time a field crosses from "the best we can do is manage it" to "we can actually treat the cause." The value migrates. And most people standing in the old field never see it coming until the ground is already gone.
I think a line exactly like that was crossed this spring, in a field most people still file under science fiction.
I want to show you where.
For about fifteen years, the honest verdict on senolytics, the drugs that clear the worn-out "zombie" cells that accumulate as you age and leak the inflammation that ages everything around them, was three words. Great in mice.
That verdict has been eroding since 2019, and this spring it crossed a line it had never crossed before. Let me stack what changed, in order.
In 2019, the Mayo Clinic showed, for the first time, that you could clear these cells in living human beings. In 2025, a second Mayo group showed senolytics nudging cognition in older adults at risk for Alzheimer's. The same year, a separate controlled trial in older women found only a subtle, short-lived effect on bone markers and no lasting difference by twenty weeks, a useful reminder that the human results so far are mixed, not a clean win. Then, in March 2026, a private company did the thing that had never been done: it met its primary goal in the first human trial of a precisely targeted senolytic. Eight weeks later, in May, the same company posted a second positive human readout. And separately, a different company quietly solved the one toxicity problem that had killed this entire class of drug for a decade.
Four human readouts. A mechanism that academic medicine now takes seriously. The scarcity, the thing of real value, has started to migrate, from "managing the diseases of aging one at a time" to "clearing one of their shared causes."
By every rule of markets and attention, the field should be crowded.
It is the opposite.
The billion-dollar company that defined senolytics for a generation filed for dissolution in late 2025 and is being wound down and liquidated. The companies with the actual human data are private, barely covered, and absent from most "senolytics lists" circulating online. And the single loudest name in the field this year is a company that has filed only to begin human testing, with no results yet, while the names that already have results sit in near-silence.
That is the gap. The science moved first. Attention is moving second, and slowly. Everyone is crowded around the famous name and the loud name, standing exactly where the value already left.
I spent considerable time this month running the entire senolytics field through the framework I built to study aging biology, the 25-Gate. Roughly twenty-five programs across the field. The one test that separates a real senolytic from a look-alike. And the one company that currently earns a research-tracker slot for continued observation under my framework.
It is not the famous one. It is not the loud one. And the reason it earns the slot over both of them is a single rule I will not break. It is the rule that stopped me from adding the most exciting name in the field even though it has the freshest headline.
